It would be these very moments I would feel troubled and threatened. I would feel like locking myself up in my own room till the day I have completed my ACCA and have finally got my certificate framed and hanged on the front wall in the living room. After they would leave, I used to think deeply overnight and spend a good amount of time reasoning as to why I prefer ACCA over all other accountancy certifications.
As amusing as it sounds, it is equally remorseful as well. Teachers in Pakistan do not understand nor convey the importance of the Code of Ethics & Professional Behavior that ACCA has crafted and prioritized throughout. I believe qualifications and a bunch of certificates do not make professionals; it is the work ethics and commitment to doing what’s right, just and fair that helps you stand out from the crowd.
ACCA’s Code of Ethics is not just a booklet that does not require attention. Noncompliance can even lead to suspension of membership. I am glad that ACCA is quite strict in this regard and feel proud that the authorities have taken notable measures to preserve the value of the Code. Again, the Code in itself might not have upheld the pride of the qualification – it is ACCA’s zero-compromise policy to noncompliance that has made the Code one of the most important tools for conduct of this family of 590,000 worldwide (Source: ACCA Annual Report 2013).
First of all, let me clarify that the Oxford Brookes University and the University of Oxford are two different institutes that share a similar name because they are located in the same city; Oxford, UK. Both of them are two separate entities and share no affiliation whatsoever.
If you are a student of the ACCA qualification, then you must be familiar with this partnership program. ACCA has partnered with Oxford Brookes University (OBU) to offer BSc (Hons) in Applied Accounting to the students, for absolutely no additional cost. My teacher for F8, Mr. Arif informed me that the certification costs around GBP 22,000 if opted directly through OBU.
With ACCA qualification, students can now apply for the program after they have opted for Paper P1 – Governance, Risk & Ethics and get themselves this reputed certification alongside. A professional, well-worded thesis is required demonstrating advanced level knowledge and understanding of important modern day business concepts such as corporate governance and ethics to obtain this certificate.
ACCA has not kept us bound within a set perimeter, and this partnership with OBU is the sole proof of how competent we are as professional accountants. There is no reason why any student today would not want a BSc (Hons) in Applied Accounting from the 45th most important and prestigious university of the UK; the Oxford Brookes.
Didn’t I say that ACCA is quite strict regarding the concept of professional ethics in the workplace? ACCA has proved yet again that only bookish knowledge is NOT what a professional certification is all about; for that you need to have a far more logical approach. The Foundations in Professionalism module is a free-of-cost online interactive program students who have cleared their FAB, FFA and FMA CBE examinations can appear for. It does not require any eligibility criteria – all that is needed is the first three examinations successfully passed.
In this module, a far more logical approach is applied and practical situations are provided where students have to give their own opinion as to how the ethics of the workplace may or may not have been preserved. This provides you with a Diploma in Accounting & Finance. Yes, that’s right; another diploma certifying you now have demonstrated basic level understanding of accounting and finance and are ready to leap ahead.
There is no time limit for the module – start yours today, answer the first few parts and exit the module whenever you feel like. Come back whenever you think are ready to answer the remainder. Also, there is no limit to the number of times you can appear for the Foundations in Professionalism module.
The ACCA qualification is all about growing from time to time. After every seven years, the syllabus and structure of the examinations is changed and competent measures are taken in consideration to maintain the solidarity of the qualification. Also, each year, new books are made available to the students with added course material that gives further insight into the changing work environment.
We are taught Islamic finance in Paper F9 – Financial Management. We are taught about the latest business concepts such as TQM techniques and synergy in Paper F1 – FAB. It is these little changes that ACCA adapts to and informs its students about that have put us on the forefront.
I feel proud to be associated with ACCA qualification and look forward to becoming a member myself one day. The Code of Ethics, the OBU program, the Diploma in Accounting & Business and the most up-to-date knowledge that this qualification has provided me gives me the confidence to defend this family of 590,000 professionals that I belong to.
