Okay, enough chatter. Today, I will introduce another important term to many of you. I am pretty sure more than 75% of us have not heard it, but it’s really cool. The term is “Intrapreneurship”!
Yup, you read that right – intrapreneurship. Okay, no need to skip reading and commenting “It’s ENTREpreneurship, Shahroze!” because I know entrepreneurship is a word. But what’s really interesting is intrapreneurship. I wish the college’s business books had taught me the terminology so that I could simply show off a cool new term but I guess glory comes in packs of all 6s and 7s.
Right, intrapreneurship is basically the art of steering an organization like an entrepreneur while you are just another employee in the company. The term is mostly common amongst higher management and directorial level professionals who really have to do all the work while the president just sits back and relaxes (just kidding, Bill Gates didn’t do that!).
And NO, the term isn’t just two words crossed together to form a new catchy term; intrapreneurship is a proper word in the American Dictionary. As a matter of fact, it has been in the dictionary since 1992!! That’s like I wasn’t even born and the term was officially endorsed in dictionaries! I seriously find the business books outdated now; they should be teaching the cool concept to Business students now.
No, that’s not all. Intrapreneurs are employees who do something WITHOUT the permission of the organization and make it profitable for the venture! Like, for example, if I was an employee for a huge web design company, I would have simply taken a huge order for content writing and brought more profits to the company without even asking permission from my employer! That’s so cool! Intrapreneurs do everything like a boss, period.
And I have got some really interesting examples to state here. 3M, the technology mammoth has officially announced its policy towards possible Intrapreneurs allowing them to research and innovate and that the company will fund the whole process!
Google, no introduction needed really, has allowed its employees to keep on researching on different projects and concepts they find plausible and Google has literally hired such intelligent brains paying for 20% of their working hours just to research on what they think is possible! That’s like paying Steve Jobs while he was still working on building Windows, that’s like paying Thomas S Edison while he was still busy getting the world’s first bulb sketched. That’s like, motivation at its best!
And this is why I needed to introduce this little term to all of you. Save this term with you if you are a management professional – Intrapreneurs will come in handy. So just ask your employers to give you leverage while you try your luck on the world’s first spaceship to be landed onto the sun and I’m pretty sure they are going to fund the whole project.
